Gaia ist eine am 19. Dezember 2013 gestartete astronomische Weltraumsonde der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation (ESA), die rund ein Prozent der Sterne unserer Milchstraße (die aus geschätzt mehr als 100 Milliarden Sternen besteht) astrometrisch, photometrisch und spektroskopisch mit bis dahin unerreichter Genauigkeit kartographisch erfassen soll. Gaia ist Nachfolger der Hipparcos-Mission der ESA (1989–1993).

Der Name Gaia war ein Akronym für „Globales Astrometrisches Interferometer für die Astrophysik“.[1] Er kennzeichnet die ursprünglich für dieses Teleskop geplante Technik der optischen Interferometrie. Der Name wurde später trotz des im Laufe der Planungen geänderten Messprinzips beibehalten, er bezeichnet außerdem die Erdmuttergöttin Gaia der griechischen Mythologie.
